The Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis Card
The Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro doesn't move away from the base ATI specifications, and ships at a 400 MHz core speed and 300 MHz (600 MHz DDR) memory clock speed. On the core performance side, this provides 1.6 billion pixels per second for the RV350 core (compared to 2.2 billion for the Radeon 9500 Pro), while the 9.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth of the Radeon 9600 Pro gives it the lead over the 8.6 GB/sec. of the Radeon 9500 Pro.
Another performance factor is the enhanced memory controller of the Radeon 9600 Pro, which improves over the older version on the Radeon 9500 Pro, and is built to optimize 128-bit performance. From an overall standpoint, the core performance of the Radeon 9600 Pro lags a bit behind the Radeon 9500 Pro, but the enhanced feature set, higher memory bandwidth and optimized memory controller hopes to alleviate some of the strain.
Our review card itself is also quite standard, featuring a dark PCB, 128-MB of Samsung 2.8 ns BGA DDR, and a Sapphire-branded, round heatsink-fan unit. A big advantage of the Sapphire and other Radeon 9600 Pro cards is the absence of an external power connector, which allows the card to fit better into the mid-range market. The card's backplate is also standard, and includes DVI-I and VGA connectors, along with an S-Video port for TV or video out.
The retail Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro card includes a nice selection of hardware and software. In terms of bundled software, Sapphire includes a driver/install CD, PowerDVD XP, their Sapphire Redline overclocking program, and a full version of Soldier of Fortune II. The hardware selection is also top-notch, and features one S-Video cable, one Composite cable, one DVI / VGA adapter, one S-Video adapter and a hardcopy user manual.
